Events in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a very cultural city, being over 700-years old. The ancient northern or ‘Lanna’ culture has inspired distinctive cultural forms such as art and dance, and the city is dotted with around 300 beautiful Buddhist temples, some of which are amongst the holiest in Thailand. Because of this rich cultural and religious heritage, the city hosts a number of noteworthy festivals and events throughout the year.

  • The Umbrella Festival in January takes place in the village of Bo Sang and specializes in handicrafts made using the traditional ‘Sa paper’. The principal craft on display are exquisitely made hand painted oriental parasols. During the festival, you can also enjoy dance and cultural shows.
  • The Chiang Mai Flower Festival at the beginning of February each year is nationally-renowned celebration of all things floral, including decorated floats, and of course, a beauty parade. Some of the flower art-work is truly stunning, and the cooler northern climate means a broad range of both temperate and tropical blooms are on display.
  • Chiang Mai Art and Culture Festival, held just before Songkran at the beginning of April, is a celebration of the unique Northern cultural attributes of the Lanna region, featuring art and cultural exhibitions, dance and drama and concerts, held at various locations throughout the city.
  • Songkran, the Thai (Lunar) New Year takes place on the full moon in mid April, and is one of the most important national holidays for the whole of the country, when people will often travel home to visit families, and everyone has time off work. Songkran in Chiang Mai is nationally renowned for the week-long celebration and incorporates the devotional aspects such as merit-making at temples throughout the city, and the parade of the famous Phra Phutta Sihing Buddha image, with the best of the revelry and fun-filled water fights in the entire country. Many consider Chiang Mai as the best place to experience this most important of Thai festivals.
  • Loy Kratong, the Thai festival of lights is a delightful picturesque event in mid-November. Small floating offerings made from flowers, leaves and candles are set off to float on the rivers. This is said to symbolize, amongst other things, the sending away of negativity from the previous year and by placing a strand of hair, a fingernail, and nine one-baht coins, the attraction of good luck for the coming year. the Lanna-style traditional lanterns float majestically up in the sky, and combined with the vision of hundreds of candle-lit kratong offerings floating down the Ping river, create a magical tableau. There are also firework displays and a parade along the banks of the river.
