Chiang Mai Travel and Destination Guide
Golfing in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s top golfing destinations. The cooler climate of the northern hills and the fairly recent addition of new, well designed courses have increased Chiang Mai’s popularity amongst the game's aficionados. Green fees are well-priced, but advance booking is necessary as tee times are sometimes hard to secure during the high season. Green and caddy fees vary, but are generally cheaper on weekdays. There are golf clubs and electric cars for rent at most courses. There are also three driving ranges in the city, which charge around 30 baht for a tray of 50-60 balls.
- Royal Chiang Mai Golf is a superb 18 hole course, located at the foot of mountains about 40 minutes outside of Chiang Mai. The 18 holes are laid out on natural slopes in a well forested green, with a strong design incorporating water features and bunkers. The course has strong reputation for high standards of maintenance and operation.
- Chiang Mai Highlands Golf Resort was designed by Schmidt-Curley, the same creative team responsible for the design of many of Asia's most exciting new courses. The course is set in the hills surrounding Chiang Mai, ensuring wonderful scenery. Chiang Mai Highlands also has a well maintained practice facility with several practice greens, a short game area and a 300-yard driving range.
- Gassan Lake City Golf Club, located only 15 minutes south of Chiang Mai is a well regarded newcomer to Thailands golfing scene. This 18-hole, 6,400 yard, par-72 course was designed by Thai architect Pravit Reang-Po. Featuring a target golf and risk-reward layout, Lake City has water hazards on every hole.
- The Maejo Golf Club is nestled among fruit orchards in the foothills just north of Chiang Mai. The renowned 6,700 yard, par-72 course is risk-reward, and the lush tropical surroundings add to the enjoyment. Created by Banthun Tantivit, the clubhouse, restaurant and facilities are also top-notch.
- Chiang Mai Green Valley Country Club is only 20 minutes from central Chiang Mai, this course is particularly challenging. Due to its low-lying position, it can be more hot and humid than hillside sites, and the 7,200 yards of wide open fairways, with tough water hazards on every hole and numerous bunkers with little tree cover combine to create a challenging and stimulating round.
